High-speed steel abrasive for fast, consistent surface prep on structural steel and heavy equipment.

What Is Shot Blasting?

Shot blasting propels steel abrasive at high velocity to strip rust, mill scale, and old coatings fast — leaving a consistent surface profile that primer and paint bond to reliably.

It’s the go-to method for large structural steel jobs, fabrication shops, and heavy equipment where speed and a uniform finish matter as much as the clean itself.

Common Applications

Shot blasting is built for volume — large steel structures and heavy equipment that need a fast, uniform surface prep.

  • Structural steel beams and columns
  • Heavy equipment and machinery
  • Fabrication shop pre-treatment
  • Bridge and infrastructure components
  • Rail and transportation equipment

How It Works

Shot blasting runs inside a contained system. Steel media is thrown at the surface mechanically rather than carried on compressed air, then recovered, separated from the debris, and put back into circulation. The media works for a long time before it needs replacing, and the dust and spent coating get pulled off into collection.

Because the media and the throw are consistent, the profile that comes out is consistent too. That is the real reason to choose it: when a batch of parts all need to look and measure the same after prep, a contained mechanical system repeats far better than a hand-held nozzle can.

What to Expect on Site

This is shop work by nature — the parts come to the system rather than the system going to the parts. It suits components, flat stock, and batches, and it is a poor fit for anything fixed in place or too large to handle, which is where the mobile sandblasting rig takes over.

Turnaround depends on batch size and how heavily coated the parts are coming in. Because everything stays in the shop, weather never enters into it, and blasted parts move straight into coating or powder coating without sitting out in the humidity.

Parts come to us from across the region, including Cartersville, Acworth, and Rome.

Common Questions

What is the difference between shot blasting and sandblasting?

Shot blasting throws recyclable steel media mechanically inside a contained system; sandblasting propels abrasive with compressed air through a hand-held nozzle. Shot blasting gives a more repeatable finish on parts, sandblasting goes where the work is.

Can you shot blast something already installed?

No — the part has to come to the system. For anything fixed in place we use a mobile method instead.

Does it leave a coating-ready profile?

Yes, and a notably uniform one, which is a large part of why it is used ahead of powder coating and industrial finishes.

Is there a size limit?

There is a practical limit based on what the system can handle. Send dimensions when you enquire and we will tell you straight away whether it suits shot blasting or a different method.
